Twenty parts in four volumes tiny 12mo (145x90 mm), (4)-xxvi-123-(1)-144-133-(1)-131-(1)-135 pages / 159-(1)-159-(1)-130-154-140 pages / 143-(1)-146-142-(2)-148-137 pages / 136-138-141-(1)-156-147 pages. binding : Contemporary quarter sheep, flat spine. First joint splitted on volume 2 (spine worn). Paper with some foxings and foldings, few booklets mislaligned.
Counterfeit edition published before the original.
The memoirs from beyond the grave were published partly in episodes in "La Presse" in the last quarter of 1848. The Belgian publisher Tarride (which in 1850 was renamed "Librairie du Panthéon") compiled these episodes to deliver an urgent edition of the first parts of the Mémoires (which corresponds here to the first four parts) only a few weeks before the original in-8 edition by Penaud begins to be printed.
The rest of the publication of the original by Penaud will last until 1850, and Tarride will give a counterfeit edition in the process.
Our copy is full of the twenty volumes published, the first four of which can therefore be considered as a pre-original edition.
